vCenter Server
The next virtualization tool is VMware vCenter Server, which is a platform for unified management of the created virtual infrastructure. The point of using such a program is to manage all procedures from a single console.

Many people compare vCenter to a dispatcher that helps you monitor the operation of all VMs, track emeg errors, scale infrastructure, etc. Using a single console helps reduce the management burden and make the process simpler. With the help of vCenter, standard tasks and operations are optimized, this feature is especially useful in large-scale infrastructures. By the way, the console runs on its own OS - Photon, so third-party updates are not required.

The server can be installed on a Windows operating system or deployed as a VM on Linux. Such software is licensed, so you will need to purchase a license to use it. You can do this in several ways

Buy an Essentials package. vCenter is included in this bundle. With such a license, you will be able to manage 3 hosts with 2 physical processors on each of them. The solution is optimal for small businesses, as together with the kit you will receive an ESXi license and will be able to manage a small number of virtual machines.
Buy Standalone vCenter. This is a separate full-fledged version of the program that will allow you to manage 2,000 hosts from 25,000 virtual machines. However, it is important to understand that in this case you are purchasing a license only for vCenter, so to fully manage your IT infrastructure, you will need to purchase a license for each host. This option is suitable for large corporations with an extensive IT infrastructure.

ESXi hypervisor
The third tool we'll cover is the VMware ESXi hypervisor, which is typically installed with vSphere and vCenter. It is only a small part of the virtualization software. Based on physical hardware, it helps to run multiple operating systems on the same host. Operating systems operate autonomously from each other, but at the same they can contact the environment through the network.

There are both paid and free versions of the hypervisor. The free version of ESXi has somewhat limited functionality, so in most cases the paid version will be required. Otherwise, you will not be able to an unlimited number of operating systems on one PC and use vCenter to manage all computers.

In general, the ESXi hypervisor will be able to connect to remote storages to create, store or use a VM. In this case, you can share the remote storage between several hosts and use each to create a certain number of VMs.

ESXi is considered a type 1 hypervisor because it installs directly on the physical hardware. Having direct access to the hardware allows you to allocate hardware resources and use them to install software.

ESXi's predecessor was the ESX hypervisor, which was present in the first five versions of the VMware suites. Previously, the hypervisor was based on a Linux-based console OS, today it can also be installed on Windows. In general, the functionality of the program remained the same. The changes affected only the architecture and management features.

The more recent version of the hypervisor has a number of security and reliability benefits. Also ESXi does not depend on the OS and has some differences in functionality.
